Autumn gardens mellow into rich colours as the chaos of summer flower displays fade. However the gardener can not sit on their laurels – Autumn is a key season that will lay the foundation for next years flowers and fruit. So what are some of hte jobs you need to do?

1. Remove the dry dead parts of annual remembering to collect or redistribute seeds for next spring, clear fallen leaves from decks.

2. Put out food to encourage wildlife. Fat balls and food holders suspended high and boxes portected from teh elements will attract most birds.

3. If your garden lacks colour plant firethorn, rowan, holly or berberis which also provide berries for the birds.

4. Plant for spring and early summer colour, Bulbs include snowdrops, crocuses, hyacinths and daffodils and bedding plants such as wallflowers and polyanthus.

5. Plant trees.

6. Move conifers and deciduous trees after leaf fall.

7. Remember to bring in any tender plants.

8. Compost all those fallen leaves.

9. Take hardwood cuttings from shrubs, roses and geraniums.

10. Remember that this is the time of year for pruning many fruit trees and shrubs – miss this out and you will not get the best quality and quantity of flowers and fruit next year.
